Mother’s Day gifts can be tricky.
You want something beautiful, thoughtful, and personal… but not something that feels like you grabbed it off a shelf five minutes before brunch. And honestly? That’s where handmade gifts still win every single time.
There is just something different about giving your mom, grandma, mother-in-law, sister, daughter, or friend something you made with your own hands. It says, “I thought about you.” It says, “I spent time on this.” It says, “You matter to me.”
And that’s exactly why floral appliqué quilt patterns are such a lovely fit for Mother’s Day.
They’re soft, pretty, personal, and full of that handmade charm we all secretly want more of. The kind of gift that feels like it could sit on the back of a chair, tuck into a book bag, hang on a wall, or be used every day and still feel special.
At Thelma Quilts, my patterns are vintage-inspired floral appliqué quilt patterns for modern makers, with project categories like quilts, wall hangings, pillow covers, pouches, totes, and kitchen projects.
So if you’re looking for a Mother’s Day gift you can actually make — not just buy — here are a few handmade ideas from the shop.
What Is Appliqué Quilting?
Before we get into the gift ideas, let’s talk about appliqué quilting for a second.
Appliqué quilting is a technique where you layer fabric shapes onto a background fabric to create a design, then secure those shapes by stitching or fusing them in place. Instead of sewing lots of tiny pieces together like traditional patchwork, you build the design on top of the fabric.
Think of it like drawing with fabric.
You cut out flowers, stems, leaves, petals, or other shapes, arrange them on your background, and then stitch them down. It feels creative and playful, but still rooted in quilting tradition.
And that’s why I love it so much.
It gives you space to move things around. To step back. To fuss a little. To make something that feels personal without needing to match a hundred seams perfectly.
For Mother’s Day, that makes it extra lovely because florals already carry so much meaning. A flower appliqué pillow, tote, wall hanging, or book sleeve feels soft and thoughtful without being too fussy.

Flowers are the obvious Mother’s Day classic.
But fabric flowers?
Ohhh, that’s where it gets good.
A floral appliqué project has the sweetness of a bouquet, but it lasts much longer than cut flowers. It can be used, displayed, carried, washed, loved, and pulled out again year after year.
It also feels personal because you get to choose the colours, the fabrics, the scale, and the finished project.
You could make something soft and romantic.
Something bright and cheerful.
Something vintage-inspired.
Something that reminds you of your grandma’s garden, your mom’s favourite flower, or that one auntie who always had a floral couch and somehow made it look fabulous.
Honestly, handmade Mother’s Day gifts do not need to be complicated. They just need to feel thoughtful.
And appliqué is perfect for that.
Mother’s Day Gift Idea #1: A Floral Appliqué Tote Bag
A handmade tote bag is such a good Mother’s Day gift because it is both pretty and useful.
It can be used for errands, library books, market mornings, sewing supplies, church, travel, or just carrying around the mysterious number of things women somehow always need. Snacks, lip balm, receipts, three pens, one random button… you know the bag life.
For a practical but beautiful gift, look at floral appliqué tote patterns like:

Blue Tulips Quilted Applique Boxy Tote Pattern
Several of these tote-style patterns are listed in the Thelma Quilts pattern shop alongside other appliqué designs.
A floral tote makes a beautiful gift for:
a mom who loves useful handmade pieces
a grandma who carries books, groceries, or sewing projects
a mother-in-law who appreciates pretty but practical things
a friend who loves handmade accessories
a daughter or sister celebrating her first Mother’s Day
You can make it feel extra personal by choosing fabrics in her favourite colours.
Soft pinks and creams for something romantic.
Blue and green for something garden-inspired.
Yellow florals for something happy and sunny.
Or deeper tones if she loves a more vintage, moody look.
Mother’s Day Gift Idea #2: A Quilted Book Sleeve or Bible Sleeve
If your mom is a reader, a book sleeve is such a thoughtful little gift.
It protects her favourite book, Bible, journal, or devotional, but it also feels really personal. It’s one of those gifts that says, “I noticed what you love.”
For this kind of Mother’s Day gift, you could make:
Pink Lily Bible Sleeve Applique Pattern
Yellow Daffodils Quilted Applique Book Sleeve Pattern
Twilight Tulip Quilted Applique E-Reader Sleeve Pattern
These types of smaller projects are especially nice if you want to make something meaningful but do not have time to finish a larger quilt before Mother’s Day.
And let’s be honest… sometimes we need the gift to be beautiful and manageable.
No shame in that.
A book sleeve, Bible sleeve, or e-reader sleeve is perfect for:
a mom who reads every night
a grandma who brings her Bible to church
a friend who loves her Kindle
a new mom who needs a quiet little treat for herself
a book club gift
a teacher or mentor gift
You could even tuck a book, journal, devotional, or handwritten note inside before wrapping it.
That little extra touch? So good.
Mother’s Day Gift Idea #3: A Floral Appliqué Pillow Cover
A pillow cover is one of my favourite handmade gifts because it feels like home.
It does not need to fit anyone’s body.
It does not need to be worn.
It does not need to be the exact right size like clothing.
It just needs a spot on a chair, a bed, a couch, or a reading nook.
For Mother’s Day, a floral appliqué pillow cover feels soft, warm, and decorative without being overly precious. It’s the kind of thing someone can actually live with.
Some lovely pillow cover options from the shop include:
Bluebells Floral Applique Pillow Cover Pattern
Kiss Me Kate Floral Applique Pillow Cover Pattern
Dogwood Floral Applique Pillow Cover Pattern
Yellow Poppies Floral Applique Pillow Cover Pattern
Pillow covers are a sweet choice for:
a mom who loves decorating
a grandma who loves florals
someone moving into a new home
a handmade gift basket
a cozy reading chair refresh
a sentimental Mother’s Day surprise
You could make just one pillow cover, or sew a pair if you want the gift to feel a little more finished.
And if you’re making for someone who prefers softer home decor, choose quieter background fabrics and let the appliqué flowers be the focal point.
Mother’s Day Gift Idea #4: A Floral Wall Hanging
A wall hanging is perfect when you want the gift to feel like art.
It doesn’t have to match a couch.
It doesn’t have to be used every day.
It can simply hang on the wall and be beautiful.
That’s what makes floral appliqué wall hangings such a lovely Mother’s Day option. They feel like a handmade bouquet, but in quilt form.
A few wall hanging pattern ideas include:
Picasso’s Bouquet Applique Wall Hanging Quilt Pattern
Bachelor Button Applique Wall Hanging Quilt Pattern
Pink Peony Wall Hanging Applique Quilt Pattern
Wall hangings are especially good for:
a mom who loves handmade art
a grandma with a sewing room
a friend who loves cottage-style decor
a nursery or guest room gift
someone who appreciates sentimental handmade pieces
You could even add a label on the back with the year and a little Mother’s Day note.
Nothing too fancy.
Just something like:
Made with love for Mother’s Day.
That’s the kind of detail people remember.
Mother’s Day Gift Idea #5: A Pretty Quilted Pouch
A quilted pouch is the kind of handmade gift that always gets used.
Makeup.
Pens.
Sewing clips.
Receipts.
Charging cords.
Tiny mysterious purse objects.
A pouch can hold all of it, and somehow still feel like a treat.
For a smaller Mother’s Day project, look at pouch patterns like:
Pink Tulips Large Pouch Quilt Pattern
Purple Pansy Large Pouch Quilt Pattern
Blue Peony Large Pouch Quilt Pattern
A pouch is a good choice if you want to make something:
quick-ish
giftable
useful
easy to mail
easy to pair with another gift
You could fill it with tea, lip balm, chocolate, a gift card, hand cream, or sewing notions if your recipient is also crafty.
It’s simple, but it feels thoughtful.
And honestly, that’s the sweet spot.
Why Raw Edge Fusible Appliqué Is Beginner Friendly
If you’re newer to appliqué, I recommend starting with raw edge fusible appliqué.
Fusible appliqué uses a lightweight adhesive web, like Heat ’N Bond Lite, to temporarily bond fabric shapes to your background before stitching. You trace the shapes onto the paper side, fuse the adhesive to the wrong side of your fabric, cut the shapes out, peel the backing, then fuse the shapes to your background.
In plain English?
You glue it down with heat.
Then you stitch it down.
That’s it.
And it makes the whole process feel so much less intimidating.
Instead of trying to hold tiny petals and leaves in place while you sew, the fusible web keeps everything steady. You can arrange your flowers, check the layout, make sure it feels balanced, and then press everything in place before stitching.
This is especially helpful for gift-making because you want the project to feel enjoyable, not like you’re wrestling fabric gremlins at midnight.
Been there.
No thank you.
How to Make a Floral Appliqué Gift
Every pattern is a little different, but the basic raw edge fusible appliqué process usually looks like this:
Choose your pattern and print your templates.
Trace your appliqué shapes onto the paper side of your fusible web.
Rough cut around each traced shape, leaving a little extra space outside the line.
Fuse the adhesive side to the wrong side of your chosen fabric.
Let it cool.
Cut out each shape on the traced line.
Peel away the paper backing.
Arrange the pieces on your background fabric.
Press to fuse them in place.
Stitch around the edges by machine or by hand.
Then finish your project according to the pattern.
In my step-by-step raw edge appliqué tutorial, I walk through supplies like an appliqué template PDF, paper and fabric scissors, clear tape for oversized shapes, Heat ’N Bond Lite or lightweight fusible web, a pencil or fine-tip marker, an iron, a pressing surface, a pre-pressed background block, and stitching options.
One of the biggest tips?
Press — don’t slide.
When fusing, use a medium-hot or wool setting with no steam, press firmly for a few seconds, then lift the iron and move to the next section. Sliding the iron can shift your appliqué shapes, especially around curves.
Slow and steady wins here.
This is not a race.
This is a Mother’s Day gift, not an Olympic sport.
How to Choose the Right Pattern for Mother’s Day
If you’re not sure what to make, start with the person you’re gifting to.
Ask yourself:
Does she love to read?
Make a book sleeve, Bible sleeve, or e-reader sleeve.
Does she love decorating her home?
Make a pillow cover or wall hanging.
Does she carry a tote everywhere?
Make a floral appliqué tote bag.
Does she like useful little things?
Make a quilted pouch.
Does she love sentimental handmade gifts?
Honestly, any of them will work.
That’s the beauty of handmade gifting. You’re not just picking a product. You’re choosing a project that matches the person.
And if Mother’s Day is sneaking up on you, choose a smaller project. A pouch, sleeve, or pillow cover can still feel incredibly thoughtful without requiring the same time commitment as a larger quilt.
Make It Extra Personal
Here are a few simple ways to make your handmade Mother’s Day gift feel even more special:
Use her favourite colours.
Choose fabrics that remind you of her garden, kitchen, home, or style.
Add a handwritten note explaining why you chose that pattern.
Tuck a small extra gift inside a pouch, tote, or sleeve.
Add a quilt label with the year.
Make a matching card from fabric scraps.
Wrap it in kraft paper, ribbon, or fabric.
You do not have to overcomplicate it.
A handmade gift already carries so much heart.
The little details just make it feel even more like you.
Final Thoughts: Give Her Something Made with Love
Mother’s Day does not need to be about the biggest gift or the fanciest gift.
Sometimes the best gift is the one that took a little time.
A little fabric.
A little thread.
A little thought.
Floral appliqué quilt patterns are such a beautiful way to make something personal, useful, and full of charm. Whether you make a tote, pillow cover, book sleeve, wall hanging, or pouch, you’re giving more than the finished project.
You’re giving your time.
Your attention.
Your creativity.
And that is the part that makes handmade gifts so special.
If you’re ready to make something meaningful this Mother’s Day, browse the floral appliqué quilt patterns in the Thelma Quilts shop and choose the project that feels most like her.
Start simple.
Pick pretty fabrics.
Fuse carefully.
Stitch slowly.
And make her something she’ll remember.
